Cambie Apartments features new contemporary market rental units while maintaining as much as possible of the existing character and structure of the original building. The rebuild includes upgrades to current codes for energy efficiency, seismic, fire and life safety, with a brand new electrical and mechanical system. The unit layouts largely follow existing framing, and interior partitions that have been preserved wherever possible. All units transition to a more open and efficient floor plan, complete with modern amenities. This approach seeks to demonstrate a structural and material economy in keeping with both the City’s Greenest City 2020 goals as well as its initiatives to improve existing rental stock. Finishes have taken a ‘refurbish in place’ approach, utilising existing hard wood floors, wood panel doors, plaster and lath accent walls, and vintage fixtures. In this way the project has preserved a memory of the building’s previous existence, while injecting it with new life and ensuring its usefullness well into the future.
